Ratan Tata Early Life

Ratan Tata was born in 1937 in the British colonial period. He was the son of Naval Tata and Sooni Commissariat. His biological father was Hormusji Tata, a Tata Family Member by Blood. He was only 10 when his parents got separated. Later he was adopted by his grandmother Navajbai Tata. His younger brother was Jimmy Tata and his half-brother was Noel Tata. And Ratan Tata follows the Zoroastrian religion.

He went to Campion School, Cathedral & John Connon School, Bishop Cotton School, and Riverdale Country School. He attended Cornell University and Harvard Business School. In 1955, he completed his graduation from New York. In 1959, he completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture. He was also a member of the Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity at Cornell University.

In 2008, he gifted $50 million to the Cornell University. And he became one of the largest contributors to international donations. But now he left us at 86 on 9 October 2024. It is a sorrowful period for the entire world.

In 1970, Ratan Tata was in the managerial position in the Tata Group. During an economic slowdown, he achieved his initial success by turning the National Radio and Electronics around. In 1991, J.R.D. Tata stepped down as the chairman of Tata Sons and appointed him.

After which he reformed all the policies and implemented the designed policies to the Tata Sons. And reported all the subsidiaries to contribute their profit to the Tata Group. He gave a chance to many youths and started grabbing the younger talent.

He was only 21 when he led the Tata Group to the heights by maintaining 40-50 times profit. He acquires Tata Tea, Tetley, Tata Motors, and Tata Steel. These acquisitions led Tata to become a good profit. Most of the revenues come from operations and international sales.

He led to the innovation of the Tata Nano Car by putting it at a reasonable price. And Tata Motors also rolled out the Tigor Electric Vehicles in Gujarat. Tata had also invested in multiple companies. He invested in Snapdeal, Teabox, and CashKaro.com. He also invested in Ola Cabs around .95 Crore. In 2016, he also acquired a stake in Xiaomi. His investment also includes Nestaway and Zenify.

In 2012, he resigned his powers but his team refused to appoint his successor. His successor was Cyrus Mistry. Later, in 2016, he was removed from the position and Ratan Tata was appointed as the interim chairman. And in 2017, Natarajan Chandrasekaran became the Tata Sons’ Chairperson.

Ratan Tata Philanthropy

Ratan Tata was a supporter of rural development, education, and medicine. He was a leading philanthropist in India. He supported the University of New South Wales Faculty of Engineering.

He also donated to the University of California, San Diego where the building was renamed as Tata Trusts. He donated $70 Million to the University. He donated the amount to the Tata Institute for Genetics and Society’s Establishment. It is a 4-story building over 128,000 square feet.

Tata also donated $28 Million to the Tata Scholarship Fund for Cornell University. He wants to provide financial help to the undergraduate students of India. In 2010, he donated $50 Million to the Harvard Business School Executive Center’s Construction. It was renamed as the Tata Hall with a total cost of $100 Million.

TCS has also given the largest donation to Carnegie Mellon University for the research facility. He donated around $35 Million to the Campus. In 2014, Tata Group formed the Tata Center For Technology and Design. They donated around 940 Million Indian Currency for the establishment.
